The role of complexions in metallic nano-grain stability and deformation
نویسنده
چکیده
Nanocrystalline metals have excellent strength due to the high density of grain boundaries inside. However, these same boundaries lead to limited thermal stability and a tendency to fail in a brittle manner, issues which limit the practical usage of these materials. Most strategies for stabilization of nano-grains against coarsening rely on the idea of using segregating dopants to lower excess boundary energy. The theory of interface complexions is a useful tool for describing the thermodynamics behind segregation as well as identifying distinct segregation patterns. Some of these same complexions can also dramatically alter mechanical behavior. Unlike past strategies, which always result in a trade-off between strength and ductility, the addition of complexions can potentially increase ductility while retaining or even increasing strength. In this paper, we discuss how complexions offer a unique opportunity to address these limitations simultaneously. In addition to reviewing the current-state-of-the-art, important areas where innovation is needed are also identified. 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nanotwins Formation in Accumulative Roll-Bonded Brass
Accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) is a severe plastic deformation process that is using rolling to produce ultrafine grains in coarse grained metallic materials. In this study, ARB has been applied on 70/30 brass up to 6 cycles at ambient temperature and non-lubricated conditions to apply a true strain up to 4.8 Von Mises strain. Microstructures of ARBed brass samples were characterized by scanni...

In this paper, in order to study the flow behavior and elongation of as-cast ingots of SP-700 titanium alloy, hot tensile test was done in α/β dual phase and β single phase regions using strain rate of 0.1 s-1. Results showed that the hot tensile behavior of SP-700 in the α/β dual phase region (700-900 ºC) was different from the β single phase one (950-1100 ºC) due to the nature of alpha and be...

The effect of pre-existing nano sized precipitates on the mechanisms and rate of grain refinement has been investigated during the severe plastic deformation. A binary Al–0.2Sc alloy, containing coherent Al3Sc particles, of 3.62 nm in diameter has been deformed by accumulative roll bonding up to 10 cycles. The resulting deformed structures were quantitatively analyzed using electron backscatter...
